The two teams battled back and forth for the next eight minutes, before Taylor Tavares scored when she took a pass on the outside of the goal from Madison Haga and fired a shot from 10-yards out past Stayton goalie Pelayo with just over 27 minutes left in the game.
“I know my distance and where I can shoot from,” Tavares said. “If I shoot from outside of 15 yards, it is going to sail over the goal, so I just took it inside and set myself up for a good shot.”
Just over three minutes later, Tavares was set up again off a beautiful pass from Haga down the right sideline where Tavares caught up to the ball and fired from eight yards out for the Rangers final goal.
“I knew she [Pelayo] is a tall goalie and I knew where I had to put the ball,” Tavares said. “I know where she jumps so I tried to shoot to the upper side of the goal and, luckily, it got past her both times.”
With just under 20 minutes left in the game, Stayton made a final push when Esparza took another centering pass in front and fired a shot, but Schuler made a diving save to protect the shutout.
“We beat them 3-1 the first time we faced them so I wasn’t really sure what to expect tonight,” Mudrow said. “The girls came out fired up and really attacked offensively and kept the pressure on, most of the game.”
Tavares scored two second-half goals within four minutes of each other and Tess Schuler made six saves to lead the Rangers to victory. Estacada outshot the Eagles 13-6 in the win that sets up a battle at La Salle on Oct. 15.
“Our most compete games have been against league favorites La Salle and Gladstone,” Mudrow said. “If we can play like this we will have a shot against anyone.”
