Longtime Estacada resident Sam Haines went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010. He was 86.
A funeral celebration was held on Jan. 21, 2010, at Estacada First Baptist Church. Private interment followed at Willamette National Cemetery.
Samuel Phillip Haines was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Warsaw, Ind. He entered into the U.S. Army on April 14, 1943, and served his country until Jan. 12, 1946. He married Fern Johnson on Jan. 15, 1950. They moved to Estacada at that time, and Sam adopted Fern’s son Melvin. They had seven children together.
He was a carpenter for most of his working career. For 50 years, Haines worked as a shoe cobbler; he owned and operated “Sam’s Shoe Repair.” He also felled timber for many years.
Survivors include his sons Edward Haines of Estacada, Phillip Haines of Gresham and Ronald Haines of Seattle, Wash.; daughters Margaret Smith of Estacada, Donna Hinkle of St. Augustine, Fla., Carol McWrightman of Portland and Cindy Andrews of Laveen, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Sam was preceded in death by his wife Fern and son Melvin.
