At 7:12 a.m. on Jan. 26, a fisherman on the Clackamas River saw a black 2001 Ford Excursion floating in the water roughly 100 yards downstream from Carver Bridge.
The fisherman called 911 and representatives from the Clackamas Water Rescue Consortium responded. Rescue personnel located the submerged vehicle; only a small portion of its roof was visible above water. Emergency responders used a camera to determine that no one was inside, and obtained the vehicle’s license number. A closer look at the vehicle from a marine patrol boat also revealed broken windows and other damage to the vehicle, estimated to be worth $15,000.
The stolen SUV is registered to an owner in Clackamas, and was reported stolen Jan. 25. The ignition key was also located by Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies inside the stolen vehicle. Deputies also found tire tracks upstream on the river’s bank, where investigators believe the vehicle entered the water.
The vehicle was removed from the river shortly after investigators had completed their inspection of the scene.
If anyone has information regarding the stolen vehicle, they are asked to call the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office confidential tip line at 503-723-4949.
