Arthur Raymond Sacht was born April 18, 1928, in Clark Fork, Idaho, to William and Arlie (Burger) Sacht.

At age 14 he came to Portland where he started working for the shipyards. At 16, he lied about his age to serve his country in the Merchant Marines.
