A longtime Estacada resident, Art Sacht died with his family by his side on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2009. He was 81.
A celebration of his life was held Nov. 21 at Estacada Funeral Chapel.
Arthur Raymond Sacht was born April 18, 1928, in Clark Fork, Idaho, to William and Arlie (Burger) Sacht.
At age 14 he came to Portland where he started working for the shipyards. At 16, he lied about his age to serve his country in the Merchant Marines. In 1952, Art was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star and United Nations Service metal.
After his discharge, he went back into the Merchant Marines where he worked in the engineering department. To receive his license, he read the book and took the test without taking classes.
