William “Lucky” Clifton Hughes was born on April 29, 1920 in Marietta, Miss. He died on June 16, 2009 in Portland. He was 89.
He worked as a farmer in Mississippi as a child, and came to Oregon in 1950 and worked for Frank Schmidt in Gresham in the nursery business. He lived in Damascus and Estacada and also served in the U.S. Air Corps.
He retired from Portland Modern Fire Screen. In his retirement he enjoyed fishing and camping with his daughters and grandchildren.
He always was helping family and friends and donated his time to Meals on Wheels in Estacada.
Everyone who lives in Estacada knows who Bill ("Lucky") was; he was friendly, kind and well-loved.
He is survived by daughters Candie Mathes, Connie King, Jan Hustoft and Kathy Harris; nine grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Willamette National Cemetery on June 23 with the Oregon National Guard and Veterans of Foreign Wars presiding.
